What is a subarea plan?

A subarea plan for a community is a detailed, localized planning document that focuses on a specific geographic area. The geographic area is usually a concentrated pocket of commercial, housing, and other services that are relied upon by the immediate population in the vicinity. The subarea plan typically explores opportunities in land use and economic development for the purpose of creating a self-sustaining community. The subarea plan typically also explores the feasibility of potential land uses through utility and infrastructure capabilities.

Why create a subarea plan?

A subarea plan is a tool to help the community start establishing long-term goals and actions to ensure prosperity for future generations. The subarea plan can help with three key planning efforts:

  • Communicate future needs or goals to the County, future property owners, and agencies,

  • Assist with funding efforts, help seek grants, and efficiently use available resources, and

  • Inventory existing facilities and land uses to start improving existing conditions over time.
